School milk project in Kilimanjaro region

Abstract

This paper describes a school milk project, which aims for economic and social benefits. The economic aim is to expand the current milk market as well as creating a future market. The social aim is to improve pupils' health, which could result in improved academic performance. The project uses a public-private partnership approach, linking school committees with private milk suppliers. Implementation is carried out in a partnership between PAMOJA and two local NGOs. Participants in the scheme are 13 primary schools in Hai District and Moshi Municipality, with a total of some 5,000 pupils. Suppliers are a Dairy Company and two local diary co-operatives. The briefing describes the project, indicates the initial results and remaining challenges.
