Mapping of community home-based care services in five regions of the Tanzania mainland

Abstract

This study, from Pathfinder International, reviews the experiences and challenges of delivering home-based care (HBC) to people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) in five regions of Tanzania. The study also evaluates the effectiveness of community AIDS committees established by local government authorities in supporting Community Home-Based Care (CHBC) programmes, and findings will contribute to efforts to scale up these programmes. The study finds that the demand for HBC far exceeds the supply: many organisations offering HBC tend to cover small geographic areas and offer a limited range of services. The authors argue that there is a need to form coalitions to complement each other’s efforts and to improve access to the range of HBC services.
