Organising for development: Tanzania women's groups contesting discourses on femaleness

Abstract

In the, wake of the economic crisis in Tanzania development agencies, including the church, have increasingly encouraged women to organise for income-generating activities and empowerment. This has accentuated a situation of conflict for Chagga women of Kilimanjaro Region who stand to loose respectability and prestige if they show themselves to be too entrepreneurial and independent of men.
