Report of the review of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Programme in Tanzania

Abstract

The Ministry of Health launched the National TB and Leprosy Programme (NTLP) in 1977 with the assistance of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. Together they formulated strategies for the tuberculosis control in a resource poor country, which developed into a model TB program over the years. The NTLP is the birthplace of the WHO recommended Directly Observed Treatment Short course (DOTS) strategy, which is implemented countrywide since 1986.The review team identified a number of achievements and constraints facing the programme
