Challenges of Research in Overcoming the effects of HIV/AIDS on Rural Development

Abstract

The HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome) is reversing the gains which Tanzania an other Sub Saharan countries had realised in the field of health and socio-economic development. This reversal is reflected in a number of demographic, economic and health indicators. The rural population in Tanzania experiences this negative impact largely in terms of a reduction in agricultural labour, and hence agricultural productivity and pauperisation. Forms of wealth and assets are transformed into cash at unfavourable terms of exchange. This is not for new and diversified investments but for health care for the infected and funerals arising out of the excess adult morbidity and mortality, which have HIV/AIDS as an underlying cause. This paper identifies a number of challenges for research towards ensuring a resilient rural development in the context of HIV/AIDS. These include:
